Ho Huu Thu
"To me, figurative art acts as a release for the soul. It is not tethered to social reality, but rather elevated to another plane where meaning is unnecessary. What I strive to attain is a transcendental, sublimated aesthetic. As for abstraction, it is the truth of the soul. Technique is merely a method to perfect one's creativity. To me, art is pure."
Ho Huu Thu was born in 1940 in Tan An Village, Thu Dau Mot, Binh Duong. He attended the Thu Dau Mot School of Practical Fine Arts in Binh Duong, and subsequently studied at and graduated from the Saigon College of Fine Arts in 1965. Prior to 1975, he was a member of the Young Artists Association and served as a lecturer at the Saigon College of Fine Arts.
In 1990, he was awarded a silver medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition. His subsequent numerous solo and group exhibitions, both domestically and internationally, have demonstrated that he is an artist who has labored untiringly in the pursuit of his art with profound passion.
Ho Huu Thu creates both figurative and abstract paintings. He once shared: “To me, figurative art acts as a release for the soul. It is not tethered to social reality, but rather elevated to another plane where meaning is unnecessary. What I strive to attain is a transcendental, sublimated aesthetic. As for abstraction, it is the truth of the soul. Technique is merely a method to perfect one’s creativity. To me, art is pure.”
