Intro Artist Văn Giáo, who devoted himself wholeheartedly to art and made significant contributions to Vietnam’s revolutionary painting.

Accompanying the nation through two great wars, the late artist Văn Giáo tirelessly documented the country’s historic moments with a heart deeply devoted to Vietnam, its people, and the passion for art. As a result, his entire body of work became an ever-evolving artistic chronicle of the nation’s history. Each work tells an intimate story of his homeland, capturing historic moments through sketches made during the fierce struggles for Vietnam’s independence. His works portray everyone from ordinary people to national leaders. Through an emotionally expressive direct-sketching approach and an unwavering passion for art, the artist traveled extensively to record the nation’s historic moments through painting.

At one point, the late artist Văn Giáo’s creative journey took him across the length of Central Vietnam, from Quảng Nam and Quảng Ngãi to Bình Định, Phú Yên, and Tuy Hòa. Wherever he went, he painted tirelessly, driven by an endless passion for his craft. The sun-scorched, windswept landscape and images of guerrilla fighters crawling and rolling across the ground as they trained to throw grenades and charged forward to defeat the enemy became a source of inspiration, fueling his creativity and artistic expression. Several gouache works were created during this period, including Destruction in Phú Phong, A Resistance Scene in Tuy Hòa, Popular Education Class, and the propaganda painting Unity Against Foreign Invasion. These works were exhibited at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum at the time.

Immersing himself in the realities of combat and production, Văn Giáo’s artistic practice never ceased. Like the battlefield artists of his time, he carried little more than a pencil, a watercolor and gouache set, and a sketching case. Through tireless artistic dedication, he and his fellow artists captured vivid aspects of the war—from training exercises, drills, and combat to the bonds between comrades and the close relationship between soldiers and civilians.

Thousands of seemingly simple works were created by this gifted artist amid the smoke and fire of war, embodying the noble character of a true artist devoted wholeheartedly to serving the nation.
