IntroductionNguyễn Trung – Abstraction as a Spiritual Journey

Coming of age during the war and two decades of national division, Nguyễn Trung emerged as one of the pioneering figures of independent artistic expression in Vietnam, whose influence shaped the abstract movement from the late 20th century onward.

Representative work of abstract style

He studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Saigon (1959–1962) and quickly gained professional recognition with silver and gold medals at the Spring Art Exhibitions in 1960 and 1963. In 1966, he joined the Young Artists Association—a group committed to modernizing South Vietnamese art before 1975—alongside figures like Nguyễn Lâm, Trịnh Cung, and Nguyên Khai. During this period, Nguyễn Trung remained committed to figurative painting, especially portraying Vietnamese women with poetic grace and serenity.

The most pivotal turn in his career came in the early 1990s, when Nguyễn Trung left behind figuration and fully embraced abstraction. His works from this period feature dense color fields and complex layered textures—each canvas a meditative process, where painting became a path toward self-discovery and metaphysical contemplation. This shift was not merely stylistic but a comprehensive reorientation of aesthetics, reflecting his desire to break away from formal limitations and explore inward spiritual landscapes. Around this time, he co-founded the Group of Ten, a collective of Đổi Mới-era artists who held annual exhibitions to create space for independent artistic practice during Vietnam’s post-reform transformation.

Nguyễn Trung’s art oscillates between the figurative and the non-objective, between tangible forms and pure emotion. In every phase, his paintings embody profound introspection, where Eastern philosophy merges with modernist structures—an exceptional expression of the convergence between technique and contemplation, individuality and culture.
